We need a  wide variety of nutrients and antioxidants for our liver health. These days our livers need all the help they can get to remove and detoxify all the pollution and everyday chemicals we are inundated with. The majority of our produce is heavily treated with chemicals to ward off bugs and disease and unfortunately for us , it doesn’t vanish! Unless of course it is grown organically.

The very air we breathe is full of gas emission from vehicles, coal plants, oil refineries, smoking. added to this, food is usually highly processed and missing the original vitamin and mineral content our bodies need. We to be mindful of our lifestyle choices and to maximize our health by giving our livers the antioxidants and appropriate care and nutrition it needs to filter out those toxins and keep us at our peak levels!

Antioxidants, what are they….and why are they important to  liver health

free radicals, liver, liver health, antioxidantsAntioxidants are a wonderful group of minerals, vitamins and other food based chemicals which protect our cells from scavenging free radicals. Free radicals consist of unstable molecules, putting our whole body health under pressure and increases aging exponentially by mutating our DNA cells. This damage is the root cause of many modern illnesses, causing cancer, Alzheimer’s, heart disease by hardening artery walls through cell damage and many more.

All our internal organs, including our liver, are under threat of harm by free radicals. Antioxidants are highly beneficial in helping to detoxify pollutants in our body. The liver’s load is greatly lightened, which in turn helps it to rid our body of toxins easily. The most important and valuable antioxidant vitamins for liver health are beta carotene, C and E.

Vitamin Cvit c,liver health,antioxidants

Vitamin C is the great anti free radical destroyer antioxidant for liver health. As well as providing protection from free radicals, Vit C aids in reducing damage to liver cells from damaging chemical toxins, alcohol and medications to name a few.

Great sources of Vitamin C include – all citrus fruits, kiwifruit, all berries, broccoli, spinach and cucumber.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a fat soluble antioxidant. It prevents fats from becoming rancid from free radical attacks. The cell membranes protecting the liver are all fat based. Vitamin E helps to protect the cells that protect the liver! A study published in the Huffington Post has also shown that vitamin E, amongst other benefits, can reduce the scar tissue in liver. This is important as liver scar tissue can progress to cirrhosis.

Vitamin E sources include blackberries, apples and kiwis.

Beta Carotene

All carotenoids but especially the beta carotene antioxidants are essential for health and an effective, strong functioning immune system which is able to keep you healthy and well. Beta carotene converts to vitamin A in the liver, helping to loosen up and breakdown abused and toughened liver fibres, possibly even helping to restore them to health and prevent cirrhosis of the liver.

Great food sources of beta carotene include – watermelon, blackberries, peaches, kiwi, kale, spinach, carrots, and broccoli.
